HGV Training Courses

Demand is at an all-time high for accredited LGV (large goods vehicles) drivers. At HGV Express, we’re proud to be able to meet this demand by providing the UK haulage industry with newly qualified LGV (formally HGV) drivers after comprehensive training.

Why choose HGV Express?

As one of the UK’s leading providers of lorry driver training courses, HGV Express has had extraordinary success with a high pass rate on all our LGV / HGV courses in the UK. This enables hundreds of people to successfully complete the course each year, entering into the solid, stable and financially rewarding career of an LGV driver.

What training is available?

We offer Class 1 training (Category C+E for driving large, articulated lorries with trailer) and Class 2 training (Category C for smaller, rigid bodied vehicles without a cab) across the country.

Current lorry drivers in the haulage industry can even return to truck school in order to upgrade their licence and maximise their employment opportunities. We can help drivers upgrade to Class 1 (Category C+E) LGVs by gaining a C1 licence.

How do I get started?

A starter pack will be sent out once you have registered with HGV Express, which includes everything you need to get started such as medical forms, provisional licence forms, your DSA approved theory handbook and hazard perception software.

You will first need to get your HGV medical done, which we can arrange for you for just £49 (usually around £150 from your local GP or medical centre). Once you’ve completed your medical, you then need to apply for your HGV provisional licence, which is provided in your starter pack. Simply fill out the forms and send them off to the DVLA along with your completed medical forms.

What does the test involve?

The LGV theory test involves a multiple choice part with 100 questions and a hazard perception part with 19 scenarios, both of which must be passed in order to pass the test. The pass mark for the multiple choice section is 85.

The practical test lasts approximately 90 minutes, during this time you’ll need to demonstrate that you can drive safely under various road conditions. Various set exercises will need to be carried out including a braking exercise and reversing within a marked area into a restricted opening.

What are the benefits?

We offer some of the most flexible HGV driver options, working around your current work and life commitments wherever possible. With courses available throughout the UK; we can help students train in under a week; and in some cases we can even help finance your studies.

Licensing

HGV Express offers C Category and C & E Category training, support and accreditation.

C Category allows you to drive smaller trucks known as “rigid bodied vehicles.” These trucks do not have a separated cab and without the proper licensing, you will not be allowed to legally drive these vehicles. Training for this type of licence can be accomplished in a short amount of time, which means you will be able to get started in a new job right away.

C & E Category gives you the ability to drive larger Class 1 artic trucks that are also known as articulated lorries. These vehicles feature a cab that is separated from the trailer, and take a little extra time to learn how to drive.

At HGV Express, as well as guiding you through the training, we will also advise, help and support you in getting your first HGV job. If you’re unsure about which licence is suitable for you see our Which HGV Licence Do I Need? page.

There are several ways to finance your training. Please register and our friendly staff can help you.

Extra Training

We also provide CPC courses and training.
