Tips to pass your theory test first time!

If you’re considering training to upgrade your car licence so you can apply for work as a HGV driver, getting the necessary qualification involves passing both practical and theory tests. For some people, just reading the words ‘theory test’ will evoke memories of gruelling school exams, and the sinking feeling you experience as you realise you’re completely out of your depth!

If that sounds like you – don’t panic! It’s really nothing to worry about. With help from the team at HGV Express, you’ll approach your theory test like an articulated lorry with nothing but miles of clear motorway ahead.

Know the format

To minimise any surprises on the day, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the format of the test. In brief, there are 100 multiple choice questions covering all aspects of safe skilful HGV driving; a hazard perception section has visual and written elements with 19 videos to watch, each with 20 potential hazards for you to spot; these videos also come with a further 100 multiple choice questions.

Take practice tests

To get your brain into gear, why not try some practice theory tests before you tackle the actual test? You can do this easily online – just ask one of our staff to recommend the best websites to visit. There’ll be no record kept of your results and there’s no limit on how many tests you can take, so online practice theory tests are an ideal easy way to get yourself used to the style and content of the real thing.

Look out for the hazards of hazard perception

One of the trickiest parts of the theory test is hazard perception. Not because it’s particularly difficult, but because it can sometimes be hard to distinguish between normal activity and genuine potential dangers. Again, the best way to get your head around this is with practice. Online hazard perception tests ensure you make your mistakes and learn from them before the day of your actual test.
